ABOUT THE FILM
Before follows a group of not-yet-humans as they bide their time in a perpetual waiting room. Like an eternal DMV visit, every visitor in this room has waited for thousands of years for their number to be called to be assigned a life. Some are anxious, some are hopeful, and others are defeated by impatience before their earthly lives have even begun.

FESTIVAL UPDATES
Before screened at the NewFilmmakers LA Film Festival in the InFocus: Female Cinema Narrative Shorts block.
NewFilmmakers LA and Stage 5 featured a filmmaker interview with director Julia Monahan, producer Lauren Lukow, and lead actor Emi Ellis to discuss the making of the film.
MovieMaker magazine spotlighted the film and filmmakers in a May 2021 profile: NFMLA Celebrates Stories Portraying Diverse Experiences of Women in the Modern World
Before continued its festival run in September 2021 with in-person screenings at the Burbank International Film Festival, the Catalina Film Festival and the Richmond International Film Festival.
Festivals in 2021 included the Sarasota Film Festival, the Atlanta ShortsFest, the Irvine International Film Festival, the Nevada Women’s Film Festival, and Kansas City FilmFest International.
In January, Before earned the Best New Filmmaker Award from the Chandler International Film Festival. See the full list of award winners here.
In October 2020, Before screened as an official selection of the shorts programs at three festivals across the country: the Virginia Film Festival, the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival, and the LA Femme International Film Festival.
The film and filmmakers were also featured in an Indie Filmmaker News profile in Film Daily.
Before was recognized by the Los Angeles-based Indie Shorts Fest in August 2020, with award nominations in categories including Directing, Producing, Acting Ensemble, Original Score, Production Design, and Costume Design.
Among submissions from thirty countries, the film won the title of Best Sci-Fi Short and Best First-Time Director, and received an Outstanding Achievement Award in Production Design.
In September 2020, Before was awarded Best Music and Best Science Fiction (United States) by the 2020 Venice Shorts. The film was also selected for its first international festival - the Kosice International Monthly Film Festival. At KIMFF, the film earned the title of Best Director - Short Film and Best Sound Design.

Before is Rude Horse Production's second short film. The short was filmed in downtown Los Angeles in October 2019. Running time: 10 minutes.
